by Jun 19, 2020General0 comments

With 2020 offering so many more challenges than years past, I feel that it is important we all treat ourselves every once in a while, and one way to do that is indulge in a literal treat like…boba tea! Boba tea is such a delicious drink that has grown in popularity since the 1980s, but it is really hard to find a straw that is plastic-free and still big enough to suck up those delicious tapioca pearls! Well, after dozens of customer requests that we design a boba-friendly straw, Mason Jar Lifestyle now has Long Stainless Steel Boba Straws for Quart Mason Jars! You can make your own concoction of boba tea and finally have a straw big enough to drink up those tasty tapioca pearls while not causing harm to the environment! Win-win!

What is Boba Tea?

Boba tea actually has numerous names that people know it by, including bubble tea, pearl milk tea, tapioca tea, etc. No matter what you call it, it’s a tea-based drink that’s combined with milk, fruit, or even coffee or chocolate. In the bottom of the drink, you will find small balls made from tapioca starch. You can make any kind of unique combination of this drink including milk teas, green teas, coffee, smoothies, and even cheese! These combinations can be sweet or savory, which is really what makes this drink so delicious and unique!

The History of Boba Tea: The creation of Boba comes from the country of Taiwan. Specifically, this drink was founded in the Hanlin Teahouse located in Tainan. Tu Tsong-he was the owner of the tea house and was the first known individual to actually market tapioca pearls in the 1980s. It wasn’t until the 1990s when boba tea gained popularity in the United States and many other countries.

How to Make Your Very Own Boba Tea!

This is a recipe for a simple Black Boba Tea drink:

Ingredients:

  • 7 cups of water
  • 6 black tea bags
  • ½ cup black tapioca pearls
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • Ice
  • ¼ cup half & half

*A note for you: you can buy tapioca pearls online from walmart.com or amazon.com or check your local Asian markets*

Steps:

  1. Heat up 2 cups of water and 6 black tea bags in a pot over high heat. After the water starts boiling, take the pan off of the stove and let the tea cool off.
  2. Boil 4 cups of water on high heat, then add the tapioca pearls and boil them until they are soft (this usually takes about 20 minutes). Next, drain the pearls in a strainer.
  3. Put the strainer on top of a bowl and add the brown sugar into the strainer. Then, pour 1 cup of hot water over the sugar and tapioca pearls. Stir to ensure the brown sugar dissolves.
  4. Next, let the tapioca pearls soak in the brown sugar and water for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes have passed, separate the tapioca pearls and brown sugar and water (which is now brown sugar syrup).
  5. Pour ice and tapioca pearls into a glass, then add the black tea, brown sugar syrup, and half and half.
  6. Stir the entire mixture with a Mason Jar Lifestyle Stainless Steel Boba Straw and you are ready to enjoy!

I recently graduated from college (finally!) and not being able to have a huge ceremony celebrating my accomplishment was definitely a bit disappointing. Despite not having the ceremony, I have now learned how important it is to treat myself and celebrate my accomplishments simply just for myself. One way I celebrated was by getting a delicious boba tea with my older sister! Sometimes, it’s the little things that make all the difference!
